History @ Holden Lane Academy

Our History Curriculum has been developed to meet the objectives set out in the National Curriculum

With the implementation of the Grammarsaurus scheme of work and our local history units, we are able to further develop deeper learning across the curriculum

Overviews and medium term plans detail what will be covered in each unit, as well as the key themes and concepts that run throughout the history curriculum. We are continuing to develop the understanding and use of key vocabulary, as well as retrieval practice, to ensure pupils remember more and knowledge more

Educational visits are an important part of our curriculum as they provide pupils with further enrichment opportunities such as studying real artefacts, learning what it was like to live as a Viking, Roman or Knight and exploring places of local historical and cultural interest.

Learning in Action:

Pupil Voice:

Year 1
We learnt about who Reginald Mitchell was and that he made the Spitfire plane which helped in WWIIHe lived not far from our school and there are different ways that show he is still remembered todayWe saw a Spitfire at Hanley Museum.
Year 2
We used different information, pictures and timelines to learn about Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale as they were very importantWe should remember them for how they treated people in the past and made hospitals cleaner.  We compared herbal remedies to how they treat people today.
Year 3
We learnt about cause and consequence and that whatever we do there is always a consequenceThere was a consequence to coal mining because when the coal mines were closing, people lost their jobs and they didn’t have money.
Year 4
History is important as we are learning about events that happened in the past and important people who deserve credit for the things they achieved when they were aliveWe know that architecture was a significant achievement for people who lived in Ancient Greece and we still use columns in buildings today.
Year 5
I really enjoyed learning about the Anglo-Saxons and looking at the timeline of events to see how Britain was affected at this timeThe Vikings invaded Anglo-Saxon Britain after the Romans left because Britain had better land for settlements and was easy to reach by boat.
Year 6
Learning about WWII was really interesting and we had a workshop where we studied information and artefacts that allowed us to imagine what it would have been like for people on the home front during the warWe also analysed evidence to suggest the impact that the 1942 Sneyd Pit Colliery disaster had on our local area during this time.

Holden Lane is a small school with a big heart.
