At Holden Lane Academy, safeguarding and promoting the well-being of our children is everyone’s responsibility and our top priority.  Anyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play.

  • Miss Thomas is the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) here at Holden Lane Academy, she has a crucial role in taking the lead responsibility for child protection issues in the academy.
  • Mrs Reece is the Deputy Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and Head of Pastoral Care. She is a member of the academy’s senior leadership team and is highly trained for this role.
  • David Walley is our Chair of Governors. He is the Safeguarding Governor for Holden Lane Primary Academy.

A DSL or a member of our safeguarding team is always available during academy hours for staff to discuss any safeguarding concerns and we are always contactable by telephone or email outside of academy hours.

In conjunction with Staffordshire Police, Holden Lane Primary School is involved in an initiative called Operation Encompass. The purpose of Operation Encompass is to safeguard and support children and young people who have been involved in, heard or witnessed a domestic abuse incident. Following such an incident, children will often arrive at school distressed, upset, worried and unprepared. Operation Encompass aims to ensure that appropriate school staff are made aware early enough to support children and young people in a way that means they feel safe and included.

The procedures for reporting Domestic Abuse incidents to schools can involve a lengthy delay in the transfer of information, which means that our children are left without the support and nurture that they need when they need it most. Operation Encompass has been created to address this so that by 9am on the next school day the school’s DSL will have been informed that the child or young person has been involved, heard or witnessed a domestic incident. This knowledge, given to schools through Operation Encompass, allows the provision of immediate early intervention through silent or overt support dependent upon the needs and wishes of the child.

All schools have a duty to share any information with other organisations if they feel a child is at risk of being hurt. The DSL may contact other organisations.

The sharing of information from the Police allows the school to be ready to help your child straight away, and it means that parents are aware that the DSL knows that something has happened. Parents can come and talk to our DSL. The DSL can point you towards other people that can help. Our aim is to support children and their families.

PREVENT STRATEGY: Keeping Children Safe from Extremism

In line with the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act, which became law on 1 July 2015, schools and other authorities are required to help prevent individuals from being drawn into terrorism. This is part of the government’s Prevent strategy, designed to protect people from extremist views and potential radicalisation.

What is the Prevent Strategy?

Prevent is a government initiative aimed at stopping people from becoming involved in terrorism or supporting extremist causes. It covers all forms of terrorism and extremism, including:

  • Far-right extremism
  • Violent Islamist groups
  • Other forms of ideological extremism

How Does the Prevent Strategy Apply to Schools?

Since July 2015, schools have a legal duty to protect students from the risk of radicalisation. This is part of our broader safeguarding responsibilities, ensuring that children are shielded from extremist ideas and violence, just as we protect them from other types of harm.

Schools provide a safe space for students to discuss sensitive issues, helping them understand and protect themselves from extremist influences.

What Does This Look Like in Practice?

Many of the activities we already do in school align with the Prevent strategy, such as:

  • Promoting diversity: Encouraging understanding of different cultures and religions.
  • Challenging prejudice: Addressing discriminatory or racist comments.
  • Fostering critical thinking: Helping students develop a positive self-identity and strong reasoning skills.
  • Promoting British values: Teaching democracy, the rule of law, tolerance, and respect for different beliefs.

Additionally, we take measures to minimize risks, such as:

  • Filtering internet access to block extremist content.
  • Vetting visitors to ensure they promote safe, inclusive messages.

Each school’s approach to the Prevent duty may vary, depending on the age of the students and the needs of the community.

Key Terms

  • Extremism: Active opposition to fundamental British values like democracy and tolerance of other beliefs.
  • Ideology: A set of beliefs or principles.
  • Terrorism: The use of violence to create fear and promote a political or religious cause.
  • Radicalisation: The process by which someone comes to support extremism or terrorism.
