Geography @ Holden Lane Academy

Our Geography curriculum has been developed to meet the objectives set out in the National Curriculum.  With the implementation of the Grammarsaurus scheme of work, we have further developed deeper learning across the curriculum, including different aspects of sustainabilityOverviews and medium-term plans detail the learning opportunities that will be covered in each unit.

Our Progression of Skills document ensures that there is clear progression across all year groupsWe are continuing to develop the understanding and use of key vocabulary, as well as retrieval practice, to ensure that pupils know and remember moreEducational visits are an important part of our curriculum as they provide pupils with further enrichment opportunities such as fieldwork study within the local area.

Year 1
I have really enjoyed learning about the different seasonsIn Summer the days are longer and we have more sunshineIn Autumn the leaves begin to change colour and fall from the trees, and in Winter we are more likely to see snow.
Year 2
Climate is weather over a period of timeIn our country, England, we have a climate which is mostly rainy and not very warmWe used a rain gauge to measure the amount of rainfall we had.
Year 3
Geography lessons are important as we need to learn what it is like in other countriesThe United Kingdom has four countries: Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and WalesWe have used grid references to locate different cities in the UK, such as Edinburgh.
Year 4
It is interesting to learn about other countries, like Spain, as you can find out about different culturesWe have used atlases and research to explore the features and climates of different countries to make comparisonsWarmer countries are located closer to the equator.
Year 5
During our local river study, we followed the course of the river at three different points to examine the effects of erosionThe flow of the river changed at different locations and, where the river flowed quickly, the rocks were rounder and smoother.
Year 6
We have explored different ways to improve sustainability and protect our environmentRecycling and the use of reusable materials will help to keep our planet saferWe need to do all we can to slow down the effects of climate change.
